Introduce Your Companion

Filipinos are known to be hospitable people. You may be invited to some parties since you're the new kid in town. In part one of this blog, you already learned how to introduce yourself in Filipino like a pro.

In gatherings, you don't just introduce yourself to people you like to mingle with and leave your friends behind. You make it a point that their presence will be acknowledged, too. Afterall, you've reached the place with them by your side. To continue the momentum, you may introduce your friends in Filipino language like a pro.

When you're with a friend, instead of using "he" or "she", use "siya". If your friend's name is Megan, you will say, "Siya si Megan" or "Siya naman si Megan." You may also say it like this, "Megan ang pangalan niya."

Siya and niya are used to point Megan, your friend.

When you're with more than one friend, you may use the word "sila" instead of "siya". For example, Megan is your friend. Your other friend is named Rose. Megan and Rose are sisters. Introduce the sisters like this, "Sila ay sina Megan at Rose. Magkapatid sila."

Sila and sina are both used to point Megan and Rose instead of "They".

To further show your newly-learned Filipino language, you may add a sentence by including yourself in the picture. Instead of saying, "They are my friends," just say, "Kaibigan ko sila." To make it proper, use the word "mga" when you're pertaining to more than one, so you say it like this, "Mga kaibigan ko sila."

By now, you might have observed the use of "ko" if you're pertaining to your self, "siya" and "niya" if you're talking about someone, and "sila" and "sina" if you're talking about more than one person.

To make the moment a little intimate or friendly, try to include the one you're talking with in the scene together with your friends. Instead of saying, "We would like to be your friend. Will you eat with us?", say it in Filipino. "Gusto ka naming maging kaibigan. Maaari ka bang kumain kasama namin?

"namin" is used for "we" and "us"

To seal the friendship after getting your new friend's nod, you say, "Magkakaibigan na tayo mula ngayon." It means, "We are friends from now on."

"tayo" is used for "we" when the one you're talking with is included in the scene.

So there, just a little practice and you can introduce your whole gang like a pro!
